The Shakespeare Hospice
AWARDED £15,000 FROM THE WPH CHARITABLE TRUST
The WPH Charitable Trust has awarded £15,000 to the Hospice at Home service operated by The Shakespeare Hospice in Stratford upon Avon.
The money will be used towards the running costs of the service which serves families across the Stratford, South Warwickshire and North Cotswolds areas, from Redditch down to Honington.
Helping families since 1998, The Shakespeare Hospice last year supported over 1,000 adults and young people who accessed one or more of its specialist services, including the day hospice and hospice-at-home service, as well as pre and post bereavement counselling support for families, young people and children. This also includes transitional care for 16 to 24-year-olds, support for young carers, and spiritual, emotional and complementary therapies.
With the majority of patients expressing their wish to be at home with their loved ones during their final days, the hospice made a conscious decision to not provide in-patient beds, but to invest heavily to provide a robust, round-the-clock hospice-at-home service for the community.
The annual costs for the hospice this year are set to reach £2.3 million. The hospice-at-home service alone costs some £265,000 a year, with every penny funding salaries and equipment.
Keeping the team mobile and ‘on the road’ in terms of fuel, costs the hospice almost £1,250 per month, which equates to £155 per staff member.
With only a 7% contribution from the NHS, the rest of the income is generated by the hospice itself through its eight shops and an annual programme of fundraising events throughout the year.
Kate Butler, Trusts and Grants Fundraiser, said: “The WPH Charitable Trust has supported us from when we first opened. In that time, we have received about a dozen grants, totalling circa £200,000, which we have used towards our hospice-at-home service, our young people’s services, and towards general funds.”

WPH Charitable Trust provides funding for individuals, groups and organisations which work to prevent, relieve and cure sickness in Coventry and Warwickshire. The Trust provides grants for medical research, buildings, equipment and other forms of medical care for residents of the region.
